Exacto. Y me atraen por rezones que ni siquiera yo entiendo. No trato de explicar demasiado lo que pinto, prefiero dejar eso abierto. Y francamente, pinto para mí, no por una audiencia. La idea es que vos respondas en base a tus propias experiencias y conocimientos. Una vez que termino un cuadro, lo suelto, me lavo las manos y dejo que viva su vida.
Hace un tiempo hiciste una tapa para un libro de J.M Coetzee, una edición de Penguin. Es un cierto honor. Las tapas de libros son algo codiciado por cualquier ilustrador.
Tal cual, es un honor. El libro es fantástico, y me encanta ser parte de él aún en una forma tan periférica. Trabajar con Penguin, una editorial gigante, fue muy bueno. Después de eso me decidí que las únicas comisiones comerciales que voy a aceptar serán las de libros y literatura. Cualquier otra cosa me caería mal.
Venís del tattoo, de darlo y recibirlo. ¿Cómo empezó todo?
Empecé de muy chico. Mi primer experimento con una aguja fue como a los 13, y mi primer tattoo eléctrico ocurrió un par de años después, en el 87, creo. Y mi interés originario vino de películas y libros, personajes como Quiqueg, el indio de “Moby Dick”, José Arcadio de “Cien Años de Soledad” o Robert Mitchum en “Night of the Hunter”. Me fascinaba la idea, me hablaba de una experiencia exótica, de vidas vividas fuera de la reja restrictiva de la sociedad normal, una especie de libertad algo siniestra, me enganché, y empecé a tatuar a pleno a los 20, casi, primero lógicamente como aprendiz en un estudio. Después fue una aventura: New York, Londres, Tokyo.
¿Y qué pasó? ¿Por qué te retiraste?
Ya no podia soportar la presión constante y el contacto humano que implicaba. Creo que me convertí un poco en un sociofóbico o algo así, porque me siento mucho más feliz solo en casa con mis gatos, sin gente alrededor. Puedo pensar más claro, sentir más claro, sin que me distraigan o me estresen.
Tu trabajo tiene un sentido de oscuridad, de amenaza, como que hay algo casi demoníaco en el fondo. No es el típico surrealismo pop americano, que suele ser un montón de referencias pop y monstruítos chistosos.
Si mi trabajo tiene un sentido de amenaza es porque lo percibo en el mundo que me rodea. Y no soy muy fan del surrealismo pop, para nada, no me gusta el término. Si tiene que haber un término para los mejores ejemplos de este supuesto estilo, le pido prestado a mi amiga Kirsten Anderson que dice que es “neo-simbolismo.” Me siento muy conectado a los pintores simbolistas de fines del siglo XIX, tanto en estilo como en manejo de un tema. También la cultura pop me influencia, no te lo voy a negar, pero es algo de lo que estoy empezando a alejarme intencionalmente.

Y es más fácil de lo que parece, solo que hace ver a todo un poquito más costoso. Francamente, me compré un kit en la librería de materiales, venía con instrucciones y todo.
Pero es un recurso y una habilidad tradicional, al fin y al cabo. La mayor parte del arte contemporáneo es alto en concepto y bajo en técnica.
Sin embargo, no soy tan técnico ni preciso ni técnicamente perfecto como usualmente me acusan. Cuando termino una pieza, lo único que veo son las inconsistencies. Recién mucho tiempo después puedo volver a verla con las cosas en claro.
Entonces, ¿qué compone el lenguaje visual de SekretCity?
Quiero crear historias que no tengan un final. Siento que desarrollar el drama de una narrativa dejándola abierta la mantiene con vida, porque una vez que algo termina y te lo explican o lo entendés, el misterio se acabó, la obra está muerta.

Eso es algo que me pregunto cada mañana.
