-¡De la condición humana! Quise crear algo así como una utopia hermosa y algo agridulce, donde el deseo, la lujuria y el juego pueden existir sin maldad. Encontré una forma de dirigir estos problemas míos de la vida real a través de este mundo, donde mis ninfas interactúan con sus amigos, disfrazados de conejitos, entre esqueletos y hombres huevo, que toman las inseguridades de las chicas y las transforman en amor cremoso.
-Fuiste de los primeros en hacer toys. Inauguraste todo el tema, básicamente. Tus Dunces, la serie de Dumb Luck, tus Dunnies para Kid Robot, etcetera.
-Es que crear juguetes es como hacer esculturas de edición limitada para el público. Siempre me parecieron como extensiones 3D de mis obras, y la mayoría vienen de mis muestras en galerías. Por ejemplo, el conejo de Dum Luck es de mi muestra de 1999 en la Mendenhall Gallery. O mi muñeco Toby en plush, que fue como esfumar la línea entre cultura toy y fine art precisamente.
-Nunca parás.
-Existo para crear. Desde chiquito es lo único que sé hacer. Todavía no tengo habilidades para funcionar en el mundo real. A donde sea que vaya llevo un cuaderno para bocetar.
-¿Cómo es vivir en Los Angeles, nacido y criado allí precisamente? ¿Cómo define tu cerebro?
-Me siento muy afortunado de ser de LA. Vi mucha cultura pop desde su incepción. Y de chiquito, pude conocer a artistas de verdad, y a gente que vivía de su arte. Hollywood es como el mito, donde se cumplen sueños y se rompen sueños a diario. Pude ver lo dulce y lo amargo, para serte sincero, y eso invadió mi vida.
-¿Qué debería hacer en Los Angeles alguien que no conoce Los Angeles?
-Ah, ¡no podrías escaparle al clima! El sol te besa la piel literalmente. Y hay que estar, simplemente. Ser. Comer, amar, jugar. Eso es lo que hago en LA. Este verano estuve obsesionado con correr y nadar todos los días, por ejemplo.
-¿Qué te pareció Buenos Aires? Viniste en 2007.
-Genial. Pasión, pasión, completa y sin diluír. Todos parecían tenerla. La forma en que un amigo saluda a otro, el beso en la mejilla, el abrazo, todo eso. Cómo todos quieren escuchar tu historia, y contarte la suya. De eso me acuerdo bien.
-Ahora, ¿de dónde viene toda tu estetica? Mezclar lo cute con lo decididamente fucked-up.
-De los cartoons de los 30s y 40s. Para mí eran como la perfección. Warner Brothers, los hermanos Fleischer, Disney. Amaba la forma en que estaban dibujados, cómo se movían. Me encantaba también la vieja revista Mad, y los artistas que publicaban en la New Yorker, como Saul Steinberg. Eso me llevó a Rothko, Man Ray, Warhol, o Yoshitomo Nara, Jeff Koons y Takashi Murakami. Siempre amé lo absurdo, ver arte que parece una cosa y es otra si lo mirás fijo.
